해녀는 산소통 없이 바다에 잠수해 해산물을 채취하는 제주도의 전통적인 여성 어업인입니다.
오랜 시간 동안 축적된 경험과 호흡 조절 기술을 바탕으로, 전복이나 소라, 미역 등을 직접 손으로 채취해 왔죠.
과거에는 제주도 곳곳에서 쉽게 볼 수 있었지만,
현재는 고령화와 환경 변화로 그 수가 크게 줄어들었습니다.
그럼에도 해녀 문화는 공동체 중심의 생활 방식과 독특한 바다 지식으로 가치를 인정받아
현재까지도 제주를 대표하는 중요한 문화유산으로 남아 있습니다.
Haenyeo are traditional female divers from Jeju Island who collect seafood without using oxygen tanks.
Relying on years of experience and breath-control techniques, they harvest items such as abalone, sea snails, and seaweed by hand.
Once a common sight across Jeju, the number of haenyeo has significantly decreased due to aging populations and environmental changes.
Even so, haenyeo culture continues to be recognized for its strong sense of community and unique knowledge of the sea,
remaining an important cultural heritage of Jeju Island.
